Trends vs fashions
Packaging trade shows produce a fresh trend list every year; almost none of it survives contact with a P&L. The useful exercise is not chasing the list but identifying which shifts changed actual buyer behaviour and supplier capability. Those are the ones worth budgeting against — the rest is fashion you can skip without cost.
The shifts that stuck
- Right-sizing — dimensional-weight pricing made it a permanent cost lever, not a style
- Low MOQ digital runs — changed who can access custom packaging at all
- Honest eco claims — regulation turned greenwashing from a risk into a liability
- Unboxing as a channel — user content became a measured acquisition source
- Structural simplicity — one-piece, tape-free formats won on pack-out speed
What to act on
If you ship parcels, right-size — it is arithmetic, not a trend. If you are small, use low MOQ as a testing engine. If you make eco claims, audit them against real facilities. And design the unboxing deliberately, because it is happening whether you design it or not. The rest of the trend list can wait until it shows up in your numbers.
