Custom box pricing is not a single number — it is the result of five variables interacting. This guide explains what drives the cost of custom packaging, gives realistic per-unit ranges, and shows how to reduce cost without cutting quality.

The five cost drivers
Every custom box price is built from the same five variables. Understanding them lets you control cost deliberately.
- Size — larger boxes use more board and cost more
- Board material — rigid chipboard costs more than folding carton or kraft
- Print coverage and method — digital for short runs, offset for volume
- Finishing — foil, spot UV and soft-touch add per-unit cost
- Quantity — unit price drops sharply as volume rises
Typical per-unit ranges
These are realistic ranges for common formats. Your exact price depends on your specification, and every quote we issue is itemised so you can see exactly what each element costs.
- Printed mailer boxes: ~$0.70–$2.40 per unit
- Folding cartons: ~$0.25–$1.20 per unit
- Corrugated shippers: ~$0.40–$1.80 per unit
- Rigid setup boxes: ~$2.50–$8.00+ per unit
- Volume pricing improves sharply above 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 units
How quantity affects price
Unit price drops sharply with volume because setup and tooling costs are spread across more units. A 100-box digital run is economical because there are no plates, but a 5,000-box offset run has a far lower per-unit cost. We quote the most cost-effective method for your quantity automatically.
How to reduce custom packaging cost
- Right-size to cut board usage and dimensional weight
- Use digital printing under 750 units to avoid plate costs
- Limit finishing to one high-impact element like the logo
- Choose kraft or uncoated board over coated white stock
- Gang multiple SKUs on one run to share setup cost
- Reorder at volume once demand is steady — tooling is stored free
