Low MOQ — low minimum order quantity — is the single most important packaging term for small brands to understand. It is the difference between launching with custom printed packaging or being forced into generic stock boxes. This guide explains what low MOQ means, why it matters, and how to use it.

What does low MOQ mean?
MOQ is the minimum order quantity — the smallest number of units a manufacturer will produce in one run. Low MOQ means that minimum is set low enough for small brands to reach. Get Custom Box's low MOQ starts at 50 custom printed boxes (50 for plain die-cut shippers), compared to the 5,000–10,000 unit minimums common in the industry.
Why low MOQ changes the maths
With a 10,000-unit minimum, a startup has to tie up thousands of dollars in packaging before a single sale — and if the design is wrong, that cash is sunk. With a 50-unit low MOQ, the same brand launches with a fraction of the outlay, tests the design with real customers, and reorders only what demand justifies. The risk shifts from the brand to the design iteration, where it belongs.
How low MOQ is made possible
Low MOQ runs are made economical by digital printing, which has no plate or setup costs — unlike offset, which charges tooling regardless of quantity. That is why a 100-box digital run costs a fraction of what it would on offset. Above roughly 750 units, offset becomes cheaper per unit, so we recommend the method that is most cost-effective for your quantity on every quote.
Does low MOQ mean lower quality?
No. Low MOQ runs go through the same printing, die-cutting and quality inspection as wholesale orders. The board, finish and print quality are identical — digital printing is what makes small quantity runs economical, not a reduction in materials or process.
When to move beyond low MOQ
Once your order volume is steady — typically above 1,000 units per run — volume pricing makes offset more cost-effective per unit. We quote both methods and recommend the switch when it saves you money. Tooling is stored and reused free, so the transition is seamless.
