Sustainable packaging is full of terms that sound similar but mean very different things — and printing the wrong one is greenwashing. This guide clarifies recyclable, compostable and recycled content, explains right-sizing, and helps you print only the claims you can honestly substantiate.

Recyclable vs compostable vs recycled content
These three terms are not interchangeable, and confusing them is the most common greenwashing mistake.
- Recyclable — can be processed by a recycling facility into new material
- Compostable — breaks down into organic matter under specific conditions
- Recycled content — made partly or fully from previously recycled material
- Biodegradable — breaks down eventually, but with no defined timeframe
Choosing the right sustainable material
The most sustainable material is the one your customers can actually dispose of correctly in their region. A compostable box is only sustainable if commercial composting is available; a recyclable box is only sustainable if local recycling accepts it. We help you match the material to your customers' reality, not just to a green-sounding label.
- Uncoated kraft — widely recyclable and home-compostable
- Recycled-content paperboard — recyclable, lowers virgin material use
- PLA-lined board — compostable in commercial facilities only
- Soy and water-based inks — no petroleum solvents
- Plastic-free windows and no laminate — keeps board recyclable
Right-sizing is sustainability
The most overlooked sustainability lever is size. A right-sized custom box uses less board, takes less space on a truck, and lowers the carbon footprint of every parcel — often more impact than switching materials. Custom packaging die-cut to your product's real footprint is inherently greener than a stock box padded with void fill.
Honest eco claims
If a material is only compostable in commercial facilities, we say so on the pack. If recycled content is 30%, we print 30%, not "eco". We advise which claims are substantiated for your material and region, and lay out recycling symbols and certifications accurately. Honest claims protect your brand and your customers.
