A thin water-based shield
Aqueous coating is a clear, water-based sealant applied inline as the sheets print — it dries in seconds under heat, so the press does not slow for it. It adds a light sheen, resists scuffing, fingerprints and moisture, and — unlike plastic lamination — stays recyclable in standard paper streams. That combination made it the default finish on printed folding cartons.
Aqueous vs the alternatives
- Aqueous — recyclable, fast, light protection; the sustainable default
- Matte or gloss lamination — a plastic film; stronger protection and richer finish, but it blocks recycling
- Varnish — oil-based, slower, yellows with age; largely superseded
- Soft-touch — a premium laminate; velvet feel, plastic-based
- UV coating — high gloss and hardness; spot UV for highlights, full flood for drama
When to choose it
Choose aqueous when the box needs scuff protection through fulfillment but must stay recyclable — which is most food, beverage and eco-branded cartons. Step up to lamination when the product is premium and the finish is part of the price signal. We quote both with the recycling consequence stated, so the sustainability claim on your panel matches the actual material.
