Gloss, exactly where you point
Spot UV is an ultraviolet-cured glossy coating applied to selected areas of a printed sheet rather than the whole surface. On a matte-laminated box, a spot-UV logo catches retail and unboxing light while the rest stays flat — a contrast the eye reads as depth without a single extra colour. It is one of the most effective premium signals available at modest cost.
How it is used well
- A logo or monogram highlighted against matte lamination — the classic move
- Patterns and textures as a near-invisible second layer
- Watermark-style large shapes for a subtle sheen shift
- Paired with deboss — a pressed logo with a gloss fill
- Full-flood UV when the whole panel should gleam
Cost and limits
Spot UV adds a coating plate and a press pass, so it is priced per element — which is also the discipline: it forces you to choose the one thing that deserves the light. It shows best on dark or matte surfaces and needs the artwork registered precisely to the print beneath. We mock it into the digital proof so you see the effect before committing the pass.
