One word, two materials
“Cardboard” is used for both solid paperboard and corrugated board — and they are different products with different jobs. Solid paperboard (folding carton stock) is a single thick sheet: smooth, printable, made for retail shelf boxes. Corrugated is a fluted core glued between liners: stronger, made to survive shipping. Asking for “cardboard boxes” without specifying which is how quotes come back wrong.
The practical split
- Solid paperboard — cereal boxes, cosmetic cartons, pharmacy shelf; sharpest print
- Corrugated — shipping boxes, mailers, display shippers; strength and crush resistance
- E-flute corrugated — the bridge: near-carton print with shipping strength
- Paperboard fails as a shipper; corrugated wastes money as a shelf carton
- Both are recyclable — the recycling claim depends on coatings, not the base
How to specify without the jargon
You do not need the vocabulary — describe the job: “it sits on a retail shelf” or “it ships through a parcel carrier on its own”. We translate that to the right board on the quote, with the reason stated. The words on your quote will name the actual material, so the next supplier you talk to is comparing the same thing.
