Why the cereal box still wins
The cereal box solved retail packaging a century ago and still dominates breakfast aisles: a tall facing that maximises shelf presence, a front panel readable at three metres, a back panel that entertains the person holding it, and a reclosable top that survives a week of openings. Those rules apply to any shelf product, cereal or not.
The rules worth stealing
- Maximise facing height — the tallest box the shelf allows wins the aisle
- One hero image and one flavour cue readable at distance
- The back panel is a second medium — story, recipe, or repeat-purchase offer
- A closure that survives repeated opens — tuck tops with a lock tab
- Panel hierarchy: brand, benefit, ingredient story, compliance — in that order
Low MOQ for new food brands
A cereal-style carton run traditionally started in the tens of thousands. Digital printing and a low MOQ of 50 units let a new breakfast or snack brand test a shelf design at a farmers market, a co-op or a regional chain before committing to a national run — same dieline, same print quality, fraction of the volume.
