The honest ranges
Custom box pricing is driven by size, board, print coverage, finishing and quantity — so any single number is a guess. But the honest ranges: printed folding cartons and mailers commonly land between roughly $0.70 and $2.40 per unit at low MOQ quantities, improving sharply above 1,000 units. Rigid setup boxes run several times that because they are hand-assembled. Plain die-cut shippers start lower still. Every quote we issue is itemised so you see exactly which decision moved which line.
What moves the number most
- Quantity — the steepest curve in packaging; 500 vs 5,000 units can halve unit price
- Print coverage — edge-to-edge CMYK costs more than a one-colour logo panel
- Board and flute — E-flute costs less than B; rigid chipboard costs more than both
- Finishing — foil, soft-touch and spot UV are per-unit costs with setup passes
- Inserts — a cavity insert adds material and a die station, but often removes a damage-rate problem
Five levers that legitimately lower cost
Gang SKUs on one run to share setup. Cut finishing to the one element that matters. Right-size to reduce board and dimensional freight. Choose digital under 750 units instead of paying offset plates. And reorder on stored tooling — repeat orders skip the setup line entirely. What does not lower cost is asking for it: a supplier who discounts on request was overquoting to start.
