You are choosing a partner, not a price
Every packaging reorder inherits decisions from the run before it — stored tooling, approved dielines, matched colour. Switching suppliers means re-engineering all of that. So the real cost of choosing wrong is not the first order; it is the migration a year later. Evaluate for the relationship, not the quote.
The evaluation checklist
- Manufacturer or broker — do they run the presses they quote?
- A real proof process — free dieline, digital proof, revisions included
- Board advice on the quote, not just a price for what you asked for
- Tooling stored free, reorders identical without re-setup
- Low MOQ available so you can test before committing volume
- Honest lead times — including the words “that date is not realistic”
- One accountable contact when something goes wrong
- Compliance competence if you are in food, supplement or hemp categories
The test order
Run a 50-unit test of your real product before scaling anything. It proves the dieline, the print quality, the delivery date and — most importantly — how the supplier behaves when you have notes. A manufacturer that handles a small revision gracefully will handle a launch crisis. One that does not, will not.
