Substance vs signal
Sustainable packaging splits into two groups: material changes that measurably reduce impact, and signals that change perception only. Recycled content, plastic-free windows and fibre barriers are substance — they alter what the package is made of and where it ends up. Vague green labels, decorative leaves and unverified claims are signal, and regulators are increasingly treating them as liability.
The substantive shifts
- Recycled-content board with a stated, verifiable percentage
- Plastic-free windows and film alternatives where barrier needs allow
- Fibre-based barriers replacing plastic laminates in food applications
- Right-sizing as the quiet majority of the footprint reduction
- Mono-material design — one material per package so recycling is actually possible
What to do this quarter
Audit your current package against the substance list. Right-size first — it is the largest lever and the cheapest. Then swap laminates and plastic windows where protection allows, and print only claims you can substantiate with the real percentage. We advise on which of your claims survive scrutiny, and which need to come off the panel before they become a problem.
