The format that refuses to date
The cigarette box is a rigid inner tray sliding inside a printed outer sleeve — a two-part format with a thumb-notch opening. It has survived a century because it works: compact, pocketable, one-hand operable, and the slide action is inherently satisfying. Modern brands keep borrowing the structure for entirely different products.
Where the slide format wins today
- Lip balms, salves and small cosmetics — pocket formats
- Tea, mints and single-serve consumables
- Tech accessories — earbuds cases, cables, small devices
- Hemp and pre-roll lines where a compact rigid format is standard
- Any small premium product where the slide is part of the ritual
Specifying it well
The failure mode is fit: a sleeve too tight scuffs the tray and sticks; too loose and the tray slides out in a pocket. The spec is a deliberate clearance engineered into the dieline with both parts quoted together. Board matters too — the tray needs caliper to hold its shape through hundreds of slides. We prototype the fit on a printed sample before the run, because a slide box that is wrong is wrong on every single unit.
